If you've never done a telehealth medical consultation, the process might feel unfamiliar. Here's a transparent walkthrough of what actually happens when you start a GLP-1 program through a telehealth platform — from the first click to your first dose.

Before the Consultation: What You'll Need

Most telehealth GLP-1 providers don't require you to have anything prepared beyond basic health information. However, having the following ready will speed up the process:

The Intake Process: 5–15 Minutes

Almost all GLP-1 telehealth platforms use an asynchronous intake model. This means you fill out a detailed health questionnaire online — there's usually no live video call required for the initial evaluation. Some platforms offer optional video consultations if you prefer face-to-face interaction.

The questionnaire covers:

The entire intake takes most people 5–15 minutes. It's designed to gather everything a prescriber needs to make a clinical determination.

Provider Review: 1–48 Hours

A licensed prescriber (MD, DO, NP, or PA depending on your state and the platform) reviews your questionnaire. Most platforms complete this review within 24 hours. Some offer same-day review, and a few advertise review windows as short as a few hours.

24–48 hrs Typical provider review time from questionnaire submission to prescription — though some platforms complete review same-day.

If you qualify, the provider writes a prescription for the appropriate GLP-1 medication at the standard starting dose. If you don't qualify — usually due to BMI below the threshold, contraindicated conditions, or drug interactions — the provider explains why and may suggest alternatives.

Medication Delivery: 3–7 Days

Once your prescription is written, the medication ships directly to your home. Compounded injectables arrive as vials with syringes and dosing instructions. Brand-name products come as pre-filled pens.

Most platforms include cold-pack shipping for injectable medications that require refrigeration. Your first shipment typically includes a month's supply plus titration guidance.

Your First Dose

All GLP-1 medications start at the lowest dose and titrate upward over weeks to months. This graduated approach minimizes side effects — primarily nausea, which is most common in the first 2–4 weeks.

Ongoing Care

GLP-1 therapy isn't a one-and-done prescription. Most telehealth platforms include ongoing check-ins as part of their monthly subscription. Your provider monitors:

Good platforms offer messaging access to your care team between scheduled check-ins for questions about side effects, injection technique, or medication storage.
